Ergo there are billions of planets out there in our galaxy alone. The argument that we are the only sentient beings because we haven’t heard from any others is (of course) theoretically possible, but highly unlikely. Given the argument above, it’s far more likely the universe is literally teeming with life at various stages of evolution. But even in our little corner of the Milky Way, we don’t hear from them because they are just too damn far away. One light year is 9.46×10^15 meters. None of our own random EM radiation so far would be more than (say) a thousand watts/m^2 at its origin and most of it far less than that. A fraction of that would actually make it out into space where it would just spread out in a spherical wave front. Let’s assume for giggles that it all does and that our alien buddies are also shouting randomly at the cosmos at roughly the same volume (power output).

That still leaves between 40–80 billion stars much like the sun. If one in five of those has an Earth-like planet, that means there may be between eight and sixteen billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way. Of course these numbers may be off. The number of sun-like stars may be lower, or higher. The number of Earth-like planets may be more, or less. We just can’t know, so far. Further, there is no reason to assume that only stars like our sun will have planets capable of supporting life. Or that only a planet will support life. There may be intelligent life on a large moon of a gas giant exoplanet in the “Goldilocks zone” of a red dwarf. There is also no way to know how typical the Sol system is with it’s eight planets, half of which are ice or gas giants, and half of which are small rocky planets like Earth. Most of the exoplanets we know about are gas giants like Jupiter, just because they are easier to detect. Remember, we haven’t actually “seen” any exoplanets. We only know they are there by the way their gravity affects their home stars, causing a wobble, or they are aligned with Earth such that the transit of the planet between Earth and its star causes the star to flicker. Small, rocky planets like Earth are just harder to find. So there may be lots of them, or not. We just don’t know, yet.

The Mars explorer Nozomi passed 1,000 km from the BrunsHIM Boston Bruins shirt of Mars. The Venus Climate Orbiter Akatsuki entered Venus orbit in a second attempt on 7 December 2015, making it the first Japanese spacecraft to orbit another planet, sixteen years after the originally planned orbital insertion of Nozomi. JAXA is also reviewing a new spacecraft mission to the Martian system; a sample return mission to Phobos called MMX (Martian Moons Explorer). As of January 2016, MMX is to be launched in fiscal year 2022. Even though there are not many successful interplanetary missions under JAXA’s belt, JAXA has excelled in other space research such as asteroid sample collection program with Hayabusa or successful launching of solar sails.
